Rule 16. Communicating Signals


The following rules for the use of Communicating Signals are taken from the rule book titled Pennsylvania Lines West of Pittsburgh Rules for the Government of the Transportation Department to take effect May 29, 1910.


These rules remain unchanged except with the addition of sub-rules (j) through (l) in the rule book titled Consolidated Code of Operating Rules - Revised 1959 to take effect December 1, 1959.

The following rules for the use of Hand, Flag, and Lamp Signals are taken from the rule book titled Pennsylvania Lines West of Pittsburgh Rules for the Government of the Transportation Department to take effect May 29, 1910.


These rules remain unchanged with the exception of order and sub-rule designation in the rule book titled Consolidated Code of Operating Rules - Revised 1959 to take effect December 1, 1959. 

Rule 16. - CCOR 1959

Each car of a passenger train must be connected with the engine by communicating signal appliance.

If the communicating signal fails, or an engine or car not so equipped is used on a passenger train, arrangements must be made for engineer to receive hand signal before passing stations.  On passenger trains so equipped, radio or telephone may be used in place of hand signals.

When applicable, hand signals will be given in addition to 16(a) and 16(c).

When train is standing, start.
(b)
Two.
When train is running, stop at once.
(c)
Three.
When train is standing, back.
(d)
Three.
When train is running, stop at next station.
(e)
Four.
When train is standing, apply or release air brakes.
(f)
Four.
When train is running, reduce speed.
(g)
Five.
When train is standing, call in flagman.
(h)
Five.
When train is running, increase speed.
(j)
Six.
Increase train heat.
(k)
Seven.
Shut off train heat.
(l)
One long.
When running, approaching meeting or waiting points as prescribed by Rule S-90; brakes sticking; look back for hand signals.
