ESU LokSound

Select Sound Configuration

Sound Files

As discussed on my ESU Sound Decoder Selection page, there are a couple of different ESU LokSound product lines.

The sound files available for one product line cannot be used with the hardware from another line.

The Select is aimed at the US market so there are no European-type sound files available for that product.

File compatability...

Select with Select - Yes.

Select with v4.0 - No.

Select with M4 - No.

v4.0 with M4 - No.

and vice versa...

Editable sound files...

Select - No.

v4.0 - Yes.

M4 - Yes.

The Select is a locked-down version of the v4.0.

You get to "SELECT" from a couple horns, bells, and maybe an optional prime mover.  The Select is otherwise more-or-less identical to the v4.0.  Motor and function control are the same.  But you get what you get for sound.  No modifications except for volume control, function assignment and logic.

ESU's work on the quality and variety of the Select files make them an exceptional value if you can accept the choices you get to SELECT from.

The configuration options presented here are the generic choices for any Select sound file.  Since there is an endless list of possible configurations, each specific file may contain different options.

These options are documented in the Sound File Bulletin.  The bulletins are available from the ESU website on the same page where you download the actual sound file.  There is a small icon that lloks like a printer on the right side of the grid

You should refer to each sound file bulletin for the specific choices for that file.

Prime Mover Options

Prime Mover sounds are selected in multiples of 16.

Prime mover 1 = 0

Prime mover 2 = 16

Prime mover 3 = 32

Prime mover 4 = 48

Not all files have multiple prime mover choices.

Some files like the steam collections offer all four options.

Brake Squeal #1 = 0

"Select" Your Sound Configuration

Configuring the Select is very easy.

Read current value of cv 48 so you know how it is currently configured.

Prime mover 1 = 0
Prime mover 2 = 16
Prime mover 3 = 32
Prime mover 4 = 48

Refer to each sound file bulletin for PM options.  Not all files have multiple choices.

Horn 1 = 0
Horn 2 = 1
Horn 3 = 2
...
Horn 16 = 15

All files have 16 options

Cant remember the value for bell options but I think...

Bell 1 = 0
Bell 2 = 64
Bell 3 = 128

All files have at least two options.  Again sound file bulletin will detail any extras.

"Select" your configuration by adding PM Horn and Bell for value of CV48.

So... CV48 =

PM 1 Horn 1 Bell 1 = 0
PM 1 Horn 7 Bell 1 = 6
PM 2 Horn 1 Bell 1 = 16
PM 2 Horn 7 Bell 1 = 24
PM 2 Horn 7 Bell 2 = 88
Etc...

Read and record the current value of CV48 so you know how it is currently configured.

"Select" your configuration by adding the value of the desired Prime Mover (PM), Horn and Bell and write that value to CV48.

So... CV48 = PM + Horn + Bell

PM 1 (0) + Horn 1 (0) + Bell 1 (0) = 0

PM 1 (0) + Horn 7 (6) + Bell 1 (0) = 6

PM 2 (16) + Horn 1 (0) + Bell 1 (0) = 16

PM 2 (16) + Horn 7 (6) + Bell 1 (0) = 22

PM 2 (16) + Horn 1 (0) + Bell 2 (64) = 80

PM 2 (16) + Horn 7 (6) + Bell 2 (64) = 86

Etc...
