N Kato Passenger Car

Light Kit Installation

Before...
After...

The Twelve Minute Installation

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

The before and after shots above ought to be worth a million.

They illustrate the value of adding a quality lighting kit to your prized passenger cars.  There is no better way to add realism to them than interior lighting.

Best of all, it is quick and easy when use SBS4DCC lighting kits and components.

Just to prove how easy it is, we made a five minute video to demonstrate the process...

An Almost Live Installation Demonstration

Really... It's Just a Twelve Step Process

Did you notice that half of that twelve minutes was spent by me stealing oxygen?

As you can see, the process for installing our kits is super easy.

If you don't want to listen to me babble on about it, just follow the simple step by step instructions below and you can enjoy the finest light kit for passenger cars in your fleet too.

What You Will Need...

Xuron 170-II Micro Shears
Testors Locking Tweezers
Pliers
Flux
Solder
Soldering Iron
Goo Glue (or Other Tape or Adhesive)

Step By Step Installation Instructions

Step 1 - Remove Kato Connector Strips from nest using Micro Shears.

Step 2 - Locate the notches on the sides of the strip and clamp the part with pliers.  The notches indicate the line where the part is to be formed.

Step 3 - Bend the end of the strip to 90 degrees.

Step 4 - Cut two pieces of decoder wire two inces long and strip both ends of each wire.

Step 5 - Apply flux to the exposed wire.

Step 6 - Apply solder to exposed ends (also called tinning the wire).

Step 7 - Use the locking tweezers to hold the contact strips upright.  Apply a small amount of flux to the tip of the short leg of the strip.  Lay the tinned wire on the end of the strip and touch it with the hot soldering iron.

Step 8 - Apply a small amount of flux to the holes marked "~+" and "~-" at either end of the circuit board.  Insert the opposite end of the wire into the holes and solder.

Step 9 - Test with DC or DCC power if desired and adjust brightness with the on-board variable resistor.

Step 10 - Secure the circuit board to the car roof with Goo (or other preferred adhesive or tape).

Step 11 - Insert the contact strips into the slots in the car floor.

Step 12 - Turn it on...

The scene reminds me of a quote from my favorite movie...

Ralphie as Adult: [narrating] The snap of a few sparks, a quick whiff of ozone, and the lamp blazed forth in unparalleled glory.

Mr. Parker: Oh, look at that! Will you look at that? Isn't that glorious? It's... it's... it's indescribably beautiful! It reminds me of the Fourth of July!
